RESTA AP (Alternative Provision)

Personalised, psychology-informed support for young people beyond mainstream education

RESTA Alternative Provision provides targeted 1:1 support for young people who are struggling to engage with education.

Delivered by trained RESTA practitioners, support takes place at home, in school, or in another agreed setting depending on need.

Our focus is not simply on managing behaviour, but on understanding what is driving disengagement and supporting meaningful, sustainable change.

Who it is for

RESTA AP supports young people who may be:

– at risk of exclusion or already excluded
– persistently absent or disengaged from school
– experiencing social, emotional or mental health needs
– struggling to access learning in a traditional environment

Our starting point

Behaviour is a form of communication.

RESTA AP takes a relational, strengths-based approach that looks beyond presentation to understand need, context and experience.

This allows support to be personalised, paced carefully and adapted as needs change.

Our approach

Highly personalised. Relationally led. Responsive to need.

Build trust

Consistent 1:1 relationships help young people feel safe, known and supported.

Create safety

Support focuses on stability, belonging and emotional safety.

Understand context

We work to understand each young person’s experiences, relationships and environment.

Develop regulation

Young people are supported with reflection, emotional regulation and self-understanding.

Build on strengths

Support helps each young person recognise strengths and move towards achievable next steps.

What support looks like

Each young person is supported through:

– regular 1:1 sessions with a trained RESTA practitioner
– delivery in the home, school or agreed setting
– structured strengths-based activities and psychoeducation
– ongoing reflection and goal-setting
– support to gradually re-engage with learning and routine

More than a placement

RESTA AP is not a standalone intervention.

We work alongside schools, families and local authorities to ensure support is joined-up and consistent.

Where appropriate, we also support reintegration into mainstream or alternative settings, and transitions into further education or other pathways.

The role of Educational Psychology

All RESTA AP work is supervised by Educational Psychologists, helping to ensure that practice is:

– evidence-informed
– reflective and responsive
– attentive to both the individual and the wider system

Why RESTA AP works

RESTA AP combines:

– consistent 1:1 relational support
– trained practitioners using a shared approach
– flexible delivery in environments where young people feel safest
– a focus on long-term change rather than short-term compliance

Outcomes and impact

RESTA AP is designed to support:

– improved engagement and attendance
– increased emotional regulation and self-understanding
– stronger relationships with trusted adults
– greater readiness to access education or next steps

Commissioning RESTA AP

We work with schools and local authorities to provide:

– flexible, needs-led support packages
– clear communication and reporting
– alignment with wider SEND and inclusion strategies
