How RESTA works

RESTA is a whole-setting approach to wellbeing, behaviour and engagement.

Rather than focusing only on individual students, RESTA looks at the bigger picture; the relationships, environments and systems that shape how people feel, behave and learn in schools and colleges.

A strengths-based, relational approach

At its heart, RESTA is positive and proactive.

It starts from the belief that resilience is not something you either have or don’t have. It is something that develops through relationships, experiences, and the environment around you.

RESTA focuses on:

  • building on what is already working

  • recognising strengths in both students and staff

  • creating supportive, connected environments

Because when people feel safe, understood and valued, they are far more able to engage and thrive.

Why relationships and context matter

We know that behaviour and wellbeing don’t happen in isolation.

They are shaped by:

  • relationships with adults and peers

  • the consistency of the environment

  • how safe and supported someone feels

RESTA works with the whole system, not just individuals, to strengthen these foundations.

A clear, step-by-step model

RESTA follows a structured, sequential approach.

It starts by creating:

safety, connection and a sense of belonging

Only once these are in place can students begin to:

reflect, build insight, and develop their strengths

From there, they are supported to:

think about the future and make meaningful changes

This step-by-step process ensures that students are not asked to change before they feel ready or able to do so.

What RESTAs do

RESTA practitioners (RESTAs):

  • build strong, consistent relationships with students

  • use practical, accessible activities to support understanding and reflection

  • help students recognise and use their strengths

  • work within the wider system to support lasting change

They are supported and supervised by Educational Psychologists, ensuring the work is grounded in evidence and applied effectively.

Working with the whole system

RESTA is not a standalone intervention.

It is designed to support wider cultural and organisational change by:

  • aligning with school and college priorities

  • working alongside staff, not separately from them

  • centring the voices and experiences of young people

This approach recognises that lasting change happens when the whole system moves together.

The outcome

When RESTA is embedded effectively, settings often see:

  • improved attendance

  • increased engagement

  • stronger relationships

  • greater confidence in both students and staff

In simple terms

RESTA helps schools move from:

“What’s wrong with this student?”

to

“What does this student need, and how can we create the conditions for them to succeed?”
